05/24/2010 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Doug Collins is home again and ready to coach the team for which he played for eight seasons.
Collins agreed to become the next head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers last week and was introduced Monday. It will be the fourth different team for Collins, who previously coached the Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards.
Selected by the Sixers as the first overall pick of the draft in 1973, Collins was a four-time All-Star in his eight seasons with the club and averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.25 steals in 415 games. He helped the Sixers to the NBA Finals in the spring of 1977, a six-game loss to Portland.
Collins inherits a team that was 27-55 last season under Eddie Jordan. It was the worst mark for the franchise since 1996-97.
"We're not ready to win a championship," Collins said at Monday's press conference. "I'm talking about being relevant again.
"This city loves pro basketball. This is one of the signature franchises in the NBA. We need to get back and we need to be relevant. We need to build something that is going to last."
Collins will have a chance to start that building process immediately, as the Sixers have the second overall pick in the June draft.
The 58-year-old last coached with the Wizards from 2001-03 and has a career mark of 332-287. His teams have been to the playoffs five times, going as far as the conference finals with the Bulls in the 1988-89 season. He was then replaced by his assistant, Phil Jackson.
Collins said he was still working on a staff, but indicated that former Sixers guard Aaron McKie would remain with the club.

After praising his leadership and work ethic through spring workouts, the Chiefs announced Tuesday they had signed the 27-year-old Cassel to a multiyear contract. Terms were not disclosed, but he will almost certainly be one of the highest-paid members of the team.
"We are excited to be able to reach a long-term agreement for Matt Cassel to be a Kansas City Chief for many years to come," owner and board chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement. "His proven leadership on and off the field will be a tremendous asset to the organization."
Patriots made him their franchise player, meaning his salary for this season will be about $15 million.
New head coach Todd Haley, taking over for Herm Edwards after a 2-14 season, refused to name a starter at any position during offseason workouts. But it was obvious to everyone the team belonged to Cassel.
"I go out there each and every day with that focus that I'm the starter," Cassel said during a June minicamp. "Competition brings out the best in everybody."
The signing will come as welcome news to Cassel's new coaches and teammates. Amiable and hardworking, online football betting he appeared to win over everyone at minicamp.
"I think he's got some unique leadership qualities. I think his teammates like him and have respect for him. I think he's doing a pretty good job on the field, too," Haley said last month. Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who had been Bill Belichick's assistant in New England, engineered the trade after the Patriots became convinced that Brady would recover fully from his knee operation.
"Since Matt arrived in Kansas City, he has embraced the team and the community," Pioli said. "His work ethic, his ability and competitive presence is what we expect from our players."

Chicago Bears (+350) - The Bears are probably a bit of an overhyped team once again this year.No, we don't think it is plausible for QB Jay Cutler to have as bad of a season as he did last year, and we do think the additions of RB Chester Taylor and DE Julius Peppers are going to help immensely, but there's still something in the water in the Windy City that we aren't so sure about. Maybe Chicago finds its way to .500... but then again, maybe it doesn't. If Favre comes back, Cutler might be the worst quarterback in this division this year.
Detroit Lions (+1500) - The Lions are probably once again going to be the whipping boys for the rest of the teams in the NFC North, but they aren't just going to roll over and die once again. There is some real talent amassing on this team offensively, as the combination of QB Matt Stafford, RB Jahvid Best, WR Calvin Johnson, and TE Brandon Pettigrew should put a bunch of points on the board if the offensive line can even remotely hold up. The questions really lie on defense, where it feels like DT Ndamukong Suh is going to be trying to stop opposing teams all by himself. This year should show some marked improvement in the Motor City.
