Earnhardt Jr. grabs first Nationwide pole in five years

09/05/2009 - Hampton, GA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start on the pole for the Degree V12 300 Nationwide Series after topping the charts in qualifying at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Earnhardt Jr. lapped the 1.54-mile track at 174.121 m.p.h. (31.840 seconds) for his 10th career Nationwide pole, but his first since August 2004 at Bristol.

He also became the 16th different pole winner in the series in 2009.

Kevin Harvick qualified .033 seconds behind Earnhardt Jr. to start alongside his fellow Sprint Cup Series competitor.

Georgia natives David Ragan and Reed Sorenson qualified third and fourth, while Kasey Kahne completed the top-five.

David Gilliland will start sixth, followed by Trevor Bayne, points leader Kyle Busch, Paul Menard and Dave Blaney.

Carl Edwards will roll off 12th, driving with a broken foot. Edwards, who trails Busch by 192 points, fractured his right foot while playing Frisbee earlier this week. He will also race in Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Atlanta.

Derrike Cope, Morgan Shepherd, John Wes Townley, J.C. Stout and Tony Ave failed to qualify. Stout and Ave withdrew their entries prior to qualifying.

Saturday's 300-mile race is scheduled to begin around 7:00 p.m. (et).

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.

Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.

Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.
